How to Reach Sikkim By Airways, Railways, & Roadways

Sikkim is a Northeastern Indian State situated in Eastern Himalayan region having altitude ranging from 300m to 8,586 m. It shares boundaries with three counties Nepal, China and Bhutan that gives an important geographical identity. Before independence, Sikkim was it self a Kingdom and ruled by Chogyals of Namgyal Dynasty. As I have already mentioned the range of altitude that tells Sikkim is a beautiful state having world 2nd highest mountain peak Kanchenjunga, Lush green forest and wildlife. Gangtok is the capital of Sikkim which is easily accessible by Roadways. There are many Hill station that allow tourist to enjoy snow falls in winter time. Lachen, Lachung ,Zuluk is some of them.

How to Reach Sikkim By Airways

Before 5 years ago Sikkim does not have its own Airport but on 24th September 2018, Government of India started its commercial flights under Airport authority of India.

And this was Pakyong airport which is situated at 4646 ft and one of the five highest airports in India and also most scenic airport in the world.

Pakyong airport code PYG is about 31 kms from its Capital Gangtok. At present Spice Jet providing services from Kolkata and Delhi. Those who want to reach Sikkim by direct flight they can come.

Another Nearest Airport to Sikkim and its Capital Gangtok Is Bagdogra (IXB) airport which is 110kms from city. Bagdogra Airport is also called Siligudi airport which comes under West Bengal territory.  There are plenty of direct and Connecting flights as well from rest of the India.  So, if you looking for a trip to Sikkim then you have two option, one is Pakyong and and another is Bagdogra or Siligudi airport for frequent flight.

How to Reach Sikkim By Roadways

Sikkim is well connected in term of Roadways. To Reach Sikkim you can drive through National Highway NH-10 from Siligudi / new jalpaigudi to Gangtok, it will take not more 5 hrs.

Any one can come by their private vehicle till Gangtok. From there you can hire taxi to explore other destinations of Sikkim.

Those who want to reach Gangtok by Public surface transport they can take Buses from Siligudi Bus station.

Sikkim nationalized transport has fixed rates for its buses and also very economical. You can reach Gangtok in Just Rs. 300 to 400 hundred by bus but problem is fixed timing for departures. 

Those tourists who are coming from Darjeeling or kalingpong district of West bengal region, they also having options of how to reach Sikkim by taking sharing taxi for Sikkim. From Darjeeling or Kalimpong it will cost around 400 to 500 hundred per person.

Sikkim can be reached by roadways from its neighboring country Nepal and Bhutan also. You can get Taxi from Kathmandu of Nepal and Phuentsholing of Bhutan to Gangtok.

Privates vehicles or other state vehicle ( 4 Wheeler ) are not allowed to enter In Lachen, Lachung, Zuluk, Nathang Valley and other border areas for security purpose.

How to Reach Sikkim By Railways

Just Like Airways and Roadways, Siligudi and New JalPaigudi are the Nearest Railway station to reach Sikkim. It is approx.

110 Kms from its capital Gangtok. NJP or Siligudi railway station are Junctions and well connected with all parts of the India. There are many Rajdhani trains from New Delhi passes through NJP.

Every train that goes to Dibrugarh, Guwahati, Tinsukia of Assam, Dimapur of Nagland, and Agartala of Tripura state Passes from NJP or Siligudi.

During day time, there are plenty of train from Howrah or Kolkata division of West Bengal. For Economical of Budget tourist, they can reach NJP from Kolkata or Delhi in just Rs. 300 to 500. For train tickets any one can book Online through IRCTC portal.
